Marketing Tips from a Self-Published Author

marketing tips from a self published author

We know it’s always helpful to hear from someone walking the same path as you, and seeing what is working for them. In this guest post, author J.D. Dudycha shares his insights on the things that are currently working for him.

Let’s talk marketing! I am a self-published author of two novels, Paint the Black, and Sitting Dead Red. My first book, Paint the Black, was published in June 2015. In the eight months since it has been released, I have tried a few different marketing approaches.

Promotional Sites

First, I have submitted my book to a couple of promotional websites. I paid for a one-day promotion on the sites, but did not warrant a great ROI. I wouldn’t say that the sites weren’t worth my time, or money, I just didn’t know what to expect.

After I posted on the sites, I found that my book was not a good fit. My advice to you is: do your homework. For example, if you write in the mystery/thriller genre, then find a promotional site that does well in that specific field.

KDP Select

Second, my books are enlisted in the KDP select program through Amazon. Essentially that means I am able to earn higher royalties, my book can reach an audience across the globe, and I am able to take advantage of Kindle’s Countdown Deal’s, or offer my book for free.

I have had tremendous success doing this. I offered my book for free for two days, and it shot to the top of the free charts making my book a best-seller in my genre/category. Not only was I able to reach new readers, but also, potential new fans.

Email Lists

Now let’s discuss the email list. Email lists are crucial. Email lists can offer you readers and fans forever, but you have to be able to offer them something of value. People are not likely to give you something so personal, unless you return the favor.

I am in the process of finishing a novella that I will be giving away on my website for free. People can sign up with their email. In exchange, I will give them an example of my work. I recommend any new author do the same, don’t wait. Do it now. I know it may be difficult to give something away, especially after you’ve worked so hard, but trust me, it will pay off in the end.

Facebook

Facebook is another great tool to utilize. They have a tremendous following, and you can target ads to specific people, with specific likes. This is an excellent way to drive people to your website and download your free offering.

Book Covers

The last topic I want to discuss is your book cover. Book covers are like first dates, if you don’t like what you see, you are unlikely to click on the link to look any further. In my opinion, your cover has to be professionally designed. Please don’t try to do it yourself. Even though you and your family thinks it looks great, others may not. Do not skimp. Find an artist who is reasonably priced, and use them.

That’s all people. I hope you’ve learned something, if not, I’d love to hear your stories. What has been your biggest success/failure through self-publishing?
